For the first time in 4 years I missed a Supercars round. Instead of going to Tassie, I went to Sandown for the Shannons Nationals. Which made the trip to Phillip Island my second official Supercars round of the year.

Sometimes getting “The Photo” is just a matter of being in the right place in the right time. The Bathurst 6 Hour was certainly a case of that.

I’ll be straight up, Sandown is not my favourite race track to shoot. Access is limited making it difficult to come up with new and interesting angles to shoot there. So when I got there for this years opening round of the Shannons Nationals I challenged myself to come up with different.

In the past I’ve been fortunate enough to cover the Formula 1 with proper FIA media credentials. Even though I didn’t have that access for this year’s Australian Formula One Grand Prix, the spectator areas still offered some opportunities to get great photos.

Even though it was my fourth motorsport event of the year. It wasn’t until the Virgin Australia Supercars season opener, the Clipsal 500, was in the books that I felt like the year had kicked off properly.

There’s more to photographing the Supercars championship than simply taking photos of cars on the track. Part of being a good editorial photographer is looking out for photo opportunities that can match up to headlines that effect the sport. The Supercars Test Day at Sydney Motorsport Park was one of those opportunities.
